Is Dairy the right source of Calcium

#Milk has calcium and protein , no doubt . But it also has high amounts of fat and no fiber. One ounce of paneer, cheese, ice cream, milk based sweets is made up of 12 to 16 ounces of milk. Imagine the the amount of fat entering our bodies with these . Today evidence based research has shown Diabetes to be linked to milk consumption. Milk is 49 % fat, thus milk consumption increases intramyocellular lipid( fat inside muscle cell ) , thus increasing insulin resistance . Milk contains IGF( insulin like growth factor )which blocks the insulin receptor , thus again increasing blood sugar . In many diabetics when milk is stopped, blood sugar levels starts falling with a week and sometimes even in 2 or 3 days . But when I tell my patients to give up milk , they literally cannot believe it and some of them don t come back to me . A little amusing . Other bad effects of milk are also because of the hormones injected into cows, to increase produce , antibiotics , pesticides in their food, chemicals, urea and adulteration. Casein in milk interferes with the absorption of iron. Pasteurization of milk kills natural enzymes which are useful in its digestion. Homogenization reduces the size of fat globules, allowing it to be more easily absorbed in the intestines . Pesticide content researched by ICMR in India ,over seven years , found it to be 570 times higher than the recommended dose . Actually we have been conditioned to believe milk is good for us . Giving up milk can be daunting . Dairy products have always been comforting to us like, a glass of milk , chocolate milk, tea, coffee , curd, ice cream etc . - we relate these with various occasions or situations . Another reason being milk is addictive . Milk contains casomorphins, protein fragments derived from the milk protein casein, that are addictive . Cheese, paneer etc are more addictive because it's a concentration of milk. Thus if we think we will consume milk only in tea or coffee we will not be able to resist items like ice cream or yogurt etc. So what could be healthier options of calcium . Let's see the possibilities. Calcium content of food per 100gms portions Cow's milk 120mg Spinach (raw) 93mg Okhra 98 mg Beans ( pinto , black ) 135mg Chickpeas 150mg Dried foods, nuts and seeds Almonds 234mg Sunflower seeds 120mg Sesame seeds 1160mg From the above examples it's quite clear , a combination of vegetables, beans, lentils, and a handful of nuts and seeds on a daily basis can give us a daily dose of calcium. According to evidence based Medicine, 500mg of calcium right from early teenage years can prevent the risk of hip fractures in late adulthood . And higher calcium doses are not required, and may even increase the risk of hip fractures . In cases where increased levels might be required it can be through supplements . That is much safer than increasing our chances of Diabetes or other diseases like asthma , joint pain, indigestion, migraines, acne, sinus problems, eczema which have been found to be improved by giving up milk and milk products . According to Benjamin Spock, a famous paediatrician, 'Cow s milk in the past have always been oversold as the perfect food, but we are now seeing that it isn't t the perfect food at all and the government really shouldn't t be behind any efforts to promote it as such ' . Giving up milk doesn t only mean better Health for us but also for the cows which are treated very cruelly for milk production ( as their calves are taken away from them at birth and milk is extracted for human consumption ) and also for better environment as the largest contributor to climate change is greenhouse gases produced by livestock.
