Telomeres are ends of chromosomes like the protective tips of shoelaces and the length of telomeres determine our longevity. The longer our telomeres the longer we are going to live. Also as we age our bodies produce less telomeres which also impacts our lifespan.
Shorter telomeres have been linked to cognitive impairment, wrinkles, heart disease, lung disease, poor memory and even Alzheimer's disease.
Scientists have found out that environmental and lifestyle factors have a significant impact on our telomeres. Obesity, lack of exercise, stress, poor diet, alcohol, smoking, stress, pollution and pessimism all affect our telomeres for the worse.
Observational studies have linked longer telomeres with a predominantly rich plant based diets whereas shorter telomeres have been found to be associated with processed sugary foods and meats. Higher omega 3 in blood have been linked to longer telomeres. Mindfulness and meditation preserve telomeres better as do regular exercise and movements. Improving telomerase production can take months and even years hence lifestyle changes need to be sustainable and long lasting.
