1. Vit B 12 is important for proper nervous system function ; it helps to build the myelin sheath , that enables nerve cells to send information efficiently. 2. It helps in the prevention of cancer as it enhances the stability of the DNA and DNA changes are where cancer starts . 3. It contributes to prevention of neuropathy in Diabetes . 4. Serious deficiency can cause constipation, sore throat, and loss of appetite probably due to changes in GI tract lining . 5. People with Diabetes and on metformin are more prone to be deficient in Vit B 12 and it's good idea to supplement with vit B 12 preferably with other B vitamins . 6. Senior citizens are also more prone to this deficiency and could restore some of the mental sharpness with a B 12 supplement . 7. Sources in the human diet include seafood, poultry, and dairy products. Little or none is found in plant foods . But deficiency is found to be equally common in vegetarians and non vegetarians nowadays .
